The Grass Is Greener: Why We Think Others Have It All
What if you already have everything you once wished for?
I was talking to a friend the other day about how easy it is to believe that other people’s lives are so much better than ours.
They seem to have everything we dream of—success, love, stability, while we feel like we’re always missing out on something.
We scroll social media, compare, and start to believe that the grass is greener somewhere else. That someone else has it all figured out while we’re still trying to put things together. But what if the truth is simpler?
What if the grass is not greener? What if it’s just different?
The illusion of the “right” path
Society tells us there’s a “right” way to live—settle down, have a family, build a home. And sometimes I think I really want to have that stability too.
But the moment I picture myself in that predictable life, I feel nothing but fear.
Because I don’t want to be stuck.
And here’s the truth: I love my lifestyle, my freedom, and the ability to move and explore as I wish without any second thought. But then I look at others and wonder:
Am I missing out?
The reality is—you can’t have it all. Life is all about choices. And every path we take means letting go of another. So what if instead of focusing on what we don’t have, we shift our perspective and start appreciating what we do have?

A reality check
So let’s switch the narrative, shall we?
What if instead of looking at our lives through the lens of lack, we start seeing it through gratitude?
We spend so much time comparing our lives to others, wanting and chasing that we forget to stop and appreciate what we already have.
But here’s the truth:
🚀A few years ago you dreamed of where you are now.
🚀The things you once wished for are part of your reality today.
🚀You are living in a moment that your past self once only wished for.
What really matters?
If there’s one thing I’m sure of is that the great asset we have is our health. We don’t think about it until it’s threatened, and then suddenly it’s all that matters.
While we are healthy, while we can move, explore, and create—we owe it to ourselves to make the most out of it.
We have no right to take life for granted.
We don’t know what’s ahead.
Everything happens exactly as it should
When you focus on what’s missing, all you’ll see is lack. But when you shift your focus to abundance, everything changes.
Maybe the things we don’t have aren’t punishments—they’re redirections. Maybe life is protecting us from something we’re not ready for yet. Maybe, before we receive more, we need to grow, heal, and fully appreciate what’s already here.
So today, instead of looking at what’s missing, try to see how much you already have.
Because right now, in this moment, you already have so much.
Good morning, Dara! It sounds like you have a wonderful plan in place. The freedom you have to live the life you want now will only help prepare you for the future where you can ‘settle down’ at that point if you want. I think so often we forget to love the life we have today, we are so worried about what the future could hold that we miss the joys of today.
You have a very healthy attitude! Keep enjoying every moment of your life. And I love your pictures, any day spent near the water at sunset is a blessing!
